Jefferson Louvat

Jefferson Louvat began learning the mandolin at the age of 11. Mainly self-taught, the biggest names in contemporary Bluegrass were his main source of inspiration. In addition, other musical styles such as Jazz, Gypsy swing, and World Music all inspired him to create a very personal style of play.

He has performed at many legendary rooms and events including the Grand Ole Opry, The Station Inn, IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association), as well as various festivals throughout the U.S. and most of Europe.

In 2010 he signed with prestigious German record label, Acoustic Music Records, and released an album 'A Walk With You' with excellent French guitarist Thierry Massoubre. In 2011 Jefferson, brother Steve on banjo/guitar and Jazz bassist Michel Vrydag released their first Louvat Bros. self-entitled album and are currently working on the follow up.

The Louvat Bros. trio won the 2012 Liz Meyer award at the EWOB (European World of Bluegrass) rewarding the European’s most innovative band in Bluegrass music. Jefferson left The Louvat Bros. in 2016 and now performs with his duo, Szabadsag.

Looking for a fine instrument is not an easy job for a south-paw musician. It is even a tougher job when looking for an F5 mandolin, until the day I’ve heard about the Northfield Workshop and the great mandolins they make. They were ready to build their very first lefty mandolin and were just waiting for the customer… I am fully satisfied with my #177 Big Mon. It has a marvellous tone and craftmanship, perfect pitch all over the fingerboard and gorgeous pieces of wood. At Northfield, you deal with a very friendly, attentive and professional team. I am proud to play the one and only left-handed mandolin they’ve ever built so far…
