but that's not what we have and not where we found it...
surprisingly, this beauty found us...

At Northfield we believe in locally sourced goods and materials, and a bit of destiny.

Unlock the door, step inside, and begins the Northfield morning ritual. Aromas dance in the shop, while the steaming kettle indicates 'it's time to pour', the coffee is brewing. Mug in hand, sifting mail. Sip, sip. It was a fresh day, with morning lights beaming in the windows, surely a sign of goodness. Goodness indeed... an unanticipated package. Inside—a strikingly gorgeous, small piece of wood, with a note—"if you like this and are interested, give me a call". This takes us on a journey to meet Tom Petredean, at the River Basin Hardwoods in Homer, MI. Tom is the saw/slab father of the silver maple we call "Michigan Koa".

Why do we call it Koa? the color, the character, from the spalting and mineral deposits, and the figure, it ain't koa, but for us wintery northerners it reminds us of soft breezes and coconut drinks...

Our A & F-style Mandolin Recommendation [Please see photos for positioning recommendations]:

“The OH-26 Mandolin Humidifier is a modified version of the OH-6 Case Humidifier. It is shorter than the OH-6, so it can stand upright in a lower depth mandolin case. It comes with a shorter clip than the OH-6 to fit the reduced depth of the mandolin case. The clip also has a wider top so it can span the side of a thicker plush case. The humidity output is reduced from that of the OH-6 because the area to be humidified is smaller. The OH-26 holds about 1/3rd less water than the OH-6 and only takes two syringes to fill it the first time. The OH-26 will only fit cases where there is an open area for the humidifier to fit (F style). It will not fit a case where the body of the mandolin is completely form fitted to the case on all sides (A style). A stainless steel strip with two sided tape and a 10 cc syringe are also included with the OH-26 Mandolin Humidifer.
Because tap and bottled water have dissolved minerals that can clog the liner, distilled water is recommended to extend the useful life of your humidifier.”

The Øx Stand is built in our workshop using the same materials and approach that shape our instruments.

Many of the same boards used for our instruments find a second life here. While they may not meet the structural demands required for an instrument, they retain the visual character we value in tonewood — depth, figuring, and natural variation that make each stand distinct.

Every stand is made entirely by hand in Marshall, Michigan. From selecting each piece of wood, to cutting, shaping, sanding, and finishing, the process is carried out at the bench. Hardware is installed and each stand is assembled individually. The base is wood burned by hand with our workshop mark.

Production is limited by both the material and the time required to make them. Stands are released in small batches and are often available only briefly.

Boveda Humidity-Packs

Maintaining your instrument’s humidity year-round can be quite a difficult thing to do. Here at Northfield, we have found a good solution that’s relatively easy to use. We now carry the Boveda 2-WAY Humidity Control Packs that help to maintain a 49% relative humidity in your instrument’s case.

We all tend to think of humidity maintenance during the drier winter months; however dryness can be a year-round issue. Dry air will suck the moisture out of your instrument and case. It can be caused by many factors, including but not limited to: natural climate, heaters, furnace, fireplaces, AC units…

Yes, less commonly thought of, AC units can impact the humidity levels and consequently impact the humidity health of your instrument. It’s important to monitor your instrument and its environmental conditions year-round. Dryness is more commonly the concern, however, we mustn't forget that too much of anything can be a negative thing—including moisture. Too much humidity will swell, bog down an instrument, and its sound. Boveda Humidity Control Packs will work both ways, letting moisture out or taking it in when needed to maintain 49% Relative Humidity.

We also find Boveda Humidity Control Packs extra helpful when gigging and traveling with instruments. They are simple, straightforward, and effective—a Mando’s travel necessity. A small thing that makes a big difference, whether traveling or not.

Cloths are available directly through Virtuoso.

For Matte and Satin finishes, we recommend: wiping down the instrument with a clean, soft, dry cloth after playing to remove any moisture from sweat and oils. For debris removal please use much caution—we recommend a clean, damp cloth. BE CAREFUL to not overwork by rubbing or buffing the finish too much as it can and will shine/gloss up easily. You may want to test this in an inconspicuous area and use great caution if looking to remove gunk such as adhesives.

Here’s a little something that very few know about the origins of Northfield…
Way back when we were deciding to make our own mandolins we were hustling as team to put food and wood on the table. Co-founder “Dino” Xhang was coming from a manufacturing background with a variety of industry experience that made it possible to take on a few different projects .. a good way to spread out the risk a bit and actively create some revenue while we hammered out the plan for mandolins. Dino’s past experience with leather tanning and Italian shoe-making design came in very helpful when it came time to look at making cases and gigbags and other gear. In fact, his experience was so vast that we took on a project making travel gear for a company based in San Diego and created a line of thin wallets, card cases, passport cases as well as some other items.  That was 20 years ago and it made what eventually became Northfield possible. We met all sorts of artisan shops along the way including the one we partnered up with on this latest project of making our own convertible mandolin straps. Just like a great tune, it all comes back around. We hope you’ll try one out.

We created something simply elegant to hold picks and memories for you… We made sure this pick box holds tight with two strong magnets and two self-closing hinges. In each, we wood-burned the signature ‘Marshall Mando Summit’ logo, an extra touch to mark the occasion.

Our pick trays have been one of the most popular items in our store. We wanted to figure out how we could make more of them, keep things sustainable, and recycle even more in the process.

We decided that our most readily available renewable resource was the beechwood we use on our footrests and a few other items. The beech has a few characteristics that make it more stable during the machining process which allows us to get two products out of one setup!

For the first time, we can now preserve the cutaway material, refine it with a little sanding, and voila! - a picture frame! It is so cool, we decided to make a few other instrument shapes too.

Specs:

Made from solid beech. We acquire the wood through a source that sells dimensional lumber to furniture companies and regularly has too much material pre-sawn. We grab the materials suited for a 4x6 frame and set up our product, using this material as responsibly as possible.

The frame is sized for a 4x6 print. Each frame ships with our classic art print “For Trees this is the After Life” postcard. The backing is made from recycled wood pulp pressed board and is press-fitted into place. The frame can be used in a portrait or landscape orientation. The wooden base and metal peg can be positioned for the best balance and attached with the 3M adhesive. Please note: it’s sticky stuff! Please make sure you’ve got it where you want it. If you set it in the center of the frame, close to the edge while in “portrait” orientation it’ll work for both. It’s very light so you can also hang it by a nail. Please note: it doesn’t ship with wall attaching hardware but because it’s solid wood the typical stuff sold at any hardware store will work. 

Frame Finish, to assure long-lasting stability and minimize any warping, the frame is sealed in a thin lacquer finish coat.

Tray Finish, it almost looks like a wooden toy so for this we finished it in a food-safe “butcher block” oil. While we don’t recommend eating it, it’s pretty darn kid-safe if your toddler decides a taste test is in order.

Package: each combo ships inside a linen bag, another reusable item. So.. that actually makes 3 products in one!

I met Kent and his company Black Lab Five more than 10 years ago when we commissioned them to create a trade show pamphlet to help introduce Northfield to a larger audience.

From the moment I saw his sketch of the “afterlife” tree I knew we had something that genuinely spoke to the origins and ethos of our brand and instruments. Others saw it too. There was an immediate emotional response to his art and we ended up handing every single postcard out. People just kept coming by and asking for one to hang up in their house or classroom or workshop. Since then, Kent’s art has been a big part of who we are and the stories we like to share. Just like his art illustrates, we’re a blend of people and culture—a dynamic collection of shapes and colors. There’s a line between a fortunate harvest and an endearing love and respect for the natural world that surrounds and provides for us. We should never doubt or forget these connections. We’re all stewards and Kent’s art always reminds us of that.

His latest piece puts the awesomeness of the F5 mandolin front and center. A foundation we stand on. A peak we seek to climb to. The power. The wanderlust. A great big “Everest” of an idea illuminated by a harvest moon. Will we ever get there?

Mandolins have always carried a piece of nature with them—built from it, inspired by it, echoing its tones. Our Walk in the Woods Tee is a nod to that connection. This Dust edition carries a new layer of poetry, marked with the words “Whose woods these are…”—the opening line of Robert Frost’s beloved Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Just as Frost captured the quiet mystery of the forest, we wanted to echo that sense of stillness and reflection. We’re excited to share the third in a series of beautiful mando infused illustrations from our friend Kent Elliott. This one takes us “Down to the River”. Inspired by the great Kalamazoo river that flows right through Marshall and Calhoun County and all the history of the music and mandolin in Michigan. Just like the “Afterlife” and “Walk in the Woods” art, this one combines our greatest passions in a captivating image - the wonders of the precious natural world and how lucky we are to be healthy and happy making instruments and playing music. In 1945, through fate or circumstance, Bill Monroe picked up the ghost of Loar. And with it, he and some Blue Grass Boys, chopped down the “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” Monroe found the tiny but mighty axe that had almost been lost to history.

The F-5 roared ahead and inspired the birth of Bluegrass. But it took another generation of rhythmic chopping and the answered prayer of “O’ Brother, Where Art Thou?” to inspire the true mandolin renaissance.

We’ve done everything we can at Northfield to pay homage to beautifully dated and classic ideas in mandolin making—but we’ve been equally inspired by the musicians and new expressions of the mandolin that are happening simultaneously to us trying to figure out who we are and what we’ll do next. Steve Gilchrist has been raising the bar on mandolin making since he started building. There has always been a distinctive look and sound to his instruments and the decades-worth of incredible work has earned him a place at the pinnacle of this craft. We’ve looked up to him for many years.

Last year we approached him with the idea of collaborating on a project to make his well-known tailpiece available on our instruments and in our online shop.

We’ve always admired the elegant design and thought that it would make a nice addition to the products we offer.

A little history about this tailpiece from Steve
“I first prototyped it in 1996-97 after slowly working on an idea I had from an old Lyon & Healy bowlback many years ago that had a clamshell design that hinged from the lower tail end. I think they were available on a lot of brands around the turn of the century and I always thought it would be a good sturdy solution to what was available at the time. I'm thrilled Northfield's attention to detail is able to make the design more widely available.”

What a cool project. A collaboration that keeps our ethos at the heart of our business bringing together art, tech, and sustainable manufacturing into a brand new product that protects these painstaking instruments we love to create. The "Recurve" is our latest case made in a partnership with world-famous German case maker, Jakob Winter. It utilizes their process for turning plant materials (hemp, flax, kenaf) into a pressed shell using heat and pressure instead of glue. The result is a rigid and highly protective shell that is incredibly light. Unique arching and internal molding provide strength and the internal dimensions have been tested with many mandolins on the market today. Cases come with a single-basic carrying strap.

This case has been a long time coming! We first got interested in the benefits of Carbon Fiber many years ago when my uncle started showing me amazing new fly rods made of the material. It wasn’t long before I started seeing it used for many applications on Ed’s other favorite hobby—sports cars.

So strong, so light! Not to mention, wow, it looked cool. Like something straight from NASA. You could mold the stuff into complex shapes. The form factors would be so inspiring... like space age sculpture.

The wheels were turning!

But this was the early 2000s, probably about 2003 or 2004, and making parts out of the material was unbelievably expensive. I investigated molding options when I was still developing instruments and cases for another musical instrument company. However, it just wasn’t economically viable to make such an expensive item. “Oh well. Gotta make great mandos first” I thought.

Since 2007, when Northfield Mandolins was founded, we have developed and produced (independently and with some fabulous collaborators) several cases. Wood, foam, fiberglass, and even the plant-based materials found on our Airloom Recurve; we have gone deep into the case-making labyrinth.

It turns out they can be harder to make than the dang mandolin— we’ve worked on for 15 years—to put inside them!

Meanwhile, there have been many great products coming out on the market. Including some very nice instrument cases, and all the while I’ve been hoping we could develop our ultimate travel case. Imagine this, our oblong fiberglass deluxe case was taking us seven different vendors and a load of shop time to assemble. We had spent about seven years making them and still hadn’t found a productive way to offer them to the public very often.. and at 10lbs each the strength and slim profile just couldn’t make up for the hefty weight.

Three years ago, we finally met someone that could help us make the shells. We could tool up without breaking the bank; utilize the massive amounts of fabric bolts, hardware, AND know-how we had accumulated; and collaboratively, produce a new case. After lots of rounds of sample making and beta/road-testing, around the globe; we are finally (phew!), pleased to offer our new case—the Airloom Tūra.

—Strong—Light—Sculpted—Attractive—

A worthy companion to our first priority: the mandolins we make. This case includes many of the features we have grown to love about our other cases, in a brand new format. It’s designed to be stealthy and not cumbersome. Durable enough for the road without being overbuilt and oversized. If it’s flying you want to do, it’s small and light enough to go on board with you, and fits easily in most overhead compartments. Could it withstand a gate check?—Sure. Would we recommend dropping your prized possession at the airplane door and stomaching the unforeseen handling and risks?—Nope. It’s not for flame throwers, to be driven over by a truck, or thrown off a building—no. Its carbon fiber structure and wrap make it very puncture-proof, waterproof, quite thermally protective, and highly festival-friendly. Let’s put it this way “we find it to be ready for nearly anything reasonable. Even stretching that to mishandling at times—the occasional stumble, or collision with other gear, crammed to the gills in a trailer that’s headed to the next venue.”

But it’s not the prevention, or solution, to instrument abuse. That said, the Tūra is the strongest case we have ever made.

Why the long-winded description and story? First and foremost, I’m a gear nut and have a true love of high-quality product development and production. It’s one of the very core things that drive me and Northfield. We experiment constantly. We are evolving in real-time, not bound to do the same thing forever, just because we could. The Tūra is where we aretoday, we can see them benefiting players and travelers alike for many years to come.

After a long hiatus, as our efforts in Michigan have switched to the newest items, the Calhoun makes a comeback from its journey around the world.

We’ve been off making mandolin players in other places (read here for more details), but we felt it was time to share this connection with all of you, albeit in a rather limited way.  We are pleased to make an improved version of the instrument available. The Calhoun has now been upgraded to feature higher-end materials and finishing.  Made right alongside our S, Big Mon, and Artist level mandolins with select materials from the same trusted sources, we are privileged enough to use for all of our instruments.   

Offered in a couple of finish color combinations, equipped with great hardware, and complete with a quality gig bag, The Calhoun (2.0) is as likely a tool for a seasoned musician as it is a wonderful companion for any aspiring student.
